I think they should have figured out the danger of the lithium batteries
before that. The airlines knew the problem.
The additional smoke detectors seems obvious because it's not expensive
and at least on the Truth, its location seems to have been chosen for where
cooking wouldn't have set it off. I'm not positive about the other
boats.
I think that the linked and better loacted smoke detectors could have replaced
the roving watchman. I have to be skeptical of that. That is expensive and
hellish. On the other hand, there are other reasons than fire to have someone
awake.
I dunno. I'm not too comfortable kibitzing from the arm chair. I'm not sure
what I think of the NTSB kibitzing either because what I do know is that most
boat captains I have traveled with were smart, careful people that went to
great lengths to take care of their passengers and craft. They were ocean
farers and all of us that know the sea know that we are out of our element
and must be constantly wary. Were the owners careless? Did they deviate from
safety too much? I don't know. I trust the captain. The lithium batteries
always made me nervous but that's the kind of hazard I'm tuned to. Most
people aren't.
Such a tragedy for the divers and the industry. Be careful of those
batteries. Be careful diving but enjoy the beauty and adventure it
offers us.
