Big question the dive "professionals" have been asking themselves for many-many years now. This is a very interesting thing to bring up and something I have become passionate about the last 20 years or so.

I am not a fan of the current pool of silly, backhanded abrasive, seemingly self-centered scuba centers that think it's all about them. They preface everything they do is in my best interest, when all they really believe is looking out for their best interest. I know they are a business, but it's been a game well overplayed. Show me as a 39 year certified diver you dive center is of value to me outside of an air fill-up here and there. Sadly, I believe today's virtual marketplace has you whooped.

There used to be 13 dive centers between where I live and Monterey Bay. Only the very few smart ones have survived. In my opinion not because of their highly regarded service or exceptionally generous retail prices. No sir. And despite their public and one-on-one droning on about how what they do or not do is good for the scuba diving community, in the long run they have no real impact. In most cases they have hurt themselves.

If I were a new diver and had to put up with all the BS shops and some of their instructors hand-off as education for dollars, I'd be willing to give up the sport too (save for medical issues). Thank goodness I 'm an older and wiser fish. Older and wiser fish are a disappearing breed because of the get in and get going on the fast and cheap now plan.

Scuba centers need to find a way to get their divers interested and stay interested without politely browbeating them into buying a $7,000 live a board trip to Fiji or insisting they are able to collect a certain amount of dollars from each customer who walks in the door (per their business plan) or else a waste of customer face time comes into the equation. As a customer, sometimes it's just easier to end the consumer versus retailer BS and move onto another sport say like fly fishing or skydiving.

There is no need to analyze further because, of course, dive centers and their certificating agencies have already done that for you.
