The text below is a fishing report out of Bodega Bay, a couple of days ago in northern California. from the website USAfishing.com

The New Sea Angler was back out after squid on Saturday 2-13. Captain Rick said it was breaking across the bar and they had to motor behind Seal Rock waiting for daylight to safely make it offshore. Once outside they rode the big 18 foot swell with a lazy 17 second period to Cordell Banks. When they arrived the squid were already on the surface waving their tentacles as if saying "here we are" and they stopped on a pile about an acre in size. 35 anglers boated around 700 squid in short order and they were headed back loaded to the gunnels with squid before the lunch hour.
There are squid catches being reported from LA to Washington state and with a biomass of 10s of millions one has to wonder how much of an impact this invasive predator (newcomer) having on baitfish, rockfish and salmon coast-wide. They are incredibly veracious predators and through they die at just one year of age will grow to 50 to over 100 pounds in that short period. You can learn more about the Humboldt squid here or check out this video and additional info here. They most definitely are having an impact that could be far more harmful than anyone has imagined.
