Be nice to get that thing out before the gray whales come by.

This might be a drift net, not a gill net. I think that the only difference is whether or not they are anchored, so the best technical description might be "anchored gill net" or "drift gill net"... but they may be different terms with different regs under california law, which is all that really matters.

anchored gill nets used to be used close to shore for halibut. They got pushed out in like 1978. Drift nets are still used, particularly for thresher sharks as far as I know.

what do you guys think the mesh size was? how big were the holes? thesher nets are big, like 14" or greater.

The regs are written in typical gubmint garble:
http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/cgi-bin/waisgate?WAISdocID=12785716814+0+0+0&WAISaction=retrieve

it's hard to read these regs. I'm not sure how they keep gray whales out of these things to begin with. I must be missing something banning them near shore on certain months.

8573.
(b) (1) The total maximum length of a shark or swordfish gill net
on the net reel on a vessel, on the deck of the vessel, and in the
water at any time shall not exceed 6,000 feet in float line length.

8575. Drift gill nets used to take shark and swordfish under the
permit provided in this article shall not be used under the following
circumstances
(f) From December 15 through January 31, in ocean waters within 25
nautical miles of the mainland coastline.

8573 (c) Any end of a shark or swordfish gill net not attached to the
permittee's vessel shall be marked by a pole with a radar reflector.
The reflector shall be at least six feet above the surface of the
ocean and not less than 10 inches in any dimension except thickness.
The permittee's permit number shall be permanently affixed to at
least one buoy or float that is attached to the radar reflector
staff. The permit number shall be at least one and one-half inches in
height and all markings shall be at least one-quarter inch in width.

I can't find anything on how long the net can be set or how often it must be checked. It may be left to the fisherman's best interest in landing fresh/live fish.
