Inner ear damage

Hi folks. I have been an open water diver since 1986. Since I have returned to scuba diving I have experienced inner ear barotrauma with ringing of the ear (tinnitus) and loss of hearing 5-10% high pitch tones in my right ear. While descending I pinched my nose like many times before but the right ear took a few seconds longer to equalize. There was no pain but nausea. When I came on to the boat my right ear was ringing and I was very sick. My doctor who is an ear specialist said the ringing of the ear is from inner ear barotrauma. He also said I was suffering from a cold (Which could explain the problem equalizing.) My doctor does not want me to dive until further evaluation but he is not favorable for me scuba diving again. My question is this. Has anybody experienced this type of injury and returned to diving? I have read some old posts around the world of people having this injury. Any information would be helpful. Thanks. Bill.
