Horizontal, not vertical

If you are horizontal, there's lots of resistance to changes in
depth because you have a larger cross-section. And with a wrist
dump, I can control my ascent rate by how high I hold the left
wrist. Changes of an inch or so relative to my body make a
difference. It's like an OLD analog TV with a fine tune on the
channel. And you can use both hands to hang onto something. When
I got a drysuit, I was amazed at how easy it was to come up
REALLY slow.

There's also a body of opinion (with which I neither agree nor
disagree because I don't do dive profiles where it's important)
that says that you are less likely to get bent in a horizontal
position.
