Although DMs perform duties such as roll calls and helping divers on and off the boat, the only real reason to have them on a commercial boat is in the role of Lifeguard. They are trained to make rescues above and below the water. If one is incapable of peforming this task, he/she should relinquish the duty to another certified DM and get to the gym.
