It appears that someone discovered the information-collecting tag that fell off a great white shark a few weeks ago and washed up on the Manhattan shore. The person who finds it can collect $500 from the Monterey Bay Aquarium, which attached that tag and similar ones to a variety of marine life to monitor behavior. Ken Peterson of the Aquarium said this week that marine biologists up north received a burst of data on Oct. 7. He expected that information to be the last because “at this point the battery is probably dead, which means no more transmissions coming our way.” The tags were designed to adhere to the shark for a set time and then fall off due to electronically triggered corrosion. The latest data originated from the intersection of Pacific Coast Highway and Palos Verdes Boulevard, Peterson said. The location is accurate within 150 yards, he said.
