This is a Scythe Butterfly. It's northern range is Catalina Island. It is not a tropical Butterfly. They live in deep water, usually deeper than 200 feet. I've seen them at Blue Caverns on occasion in as shallow as ten feet. It is startling to see a Butterfly fish in SoCal, though. Nice pic.
