Last Sat. Johnny, Tom and I paddled the kayaks from Dana Pt Harbor to San Juan Rock. It was a nice day with sun and glassy water, so the 1plus mile paddle was ok. The surf was up from the big west swell lately, up to 5' so we could not dive the shallows around the rock. We anchored in the large kelp bed outside of San Juan Rock. Vis was in the 10' range with strong surge, good enough to have a nice dive in the kelp bed. We saw large schools of fish everywhere, it was nice to see numerous large Sheephead and Calicos. This area is off the beaten path of nearby heavily dived areas. The kelp bed here is now huge, thanks to several cold water years. The area is heavily trapped so we looked at a whole bunch of short bugs, a good dive and worth the long paddle.
