Genetic studies conducted by biologists at CSULB and at USC indicate that more than 50% of the Calico Bass population on the front side of Catalina Island come from brood stock that lives in the State Marine Reserve at Blus Cavern Point. That's a quarter-mile of shoreline supporting about 10 miles of coast. If you get a chance to dive the reserve, you'll see the enormous difference even a small protected area can make.
