Well, you always have to have Plan B in mind. Suppose your buddy hadn't cancelled, you did your dive and surfaced to find that your boat was way off on the horizon and moving away. How much of a surface swim would you have been looking at to get to shore? Under some conditions, with rough seas and high surf, it could be Darwin time. I'll leave my boat unattended now and then in extremely benign conditions, but usually I like to leave someone onboard -- for just the scenario above if the dive site is a ways offshore, and to make sure the boat doesn't migrate toward any rocks if it's near-shore.
