I have occasionally been faced with broken compressors at various dive shops but never seen a sign in the window that says "compressor down." A Sport Chalet, since it is a high-volume business for which diving makes up only a small portion of traffic, is not likely to post a sign in the window that all customers will view stating that their compressor is broken; why would they want every customer who comes in the store to see that something at the store is broken? It's the same concern for appearances that keeps restaurants from posting signs in the window saying "sorry out of your favorite entree today."

So while your tank schlepp was unfortunate and I am sure annoying, I don't believe that posting a sign like that is a realistic expectation of any business.
