I dove with a tech backplate and wings for about two years, long before DIR existed. It was better in the water than a jacket BC, but there were things about it I did not like including the need for a crotch strap, and the need to include integrated weights or put on the weight belt after the backplate is on.
I find an old fashioned backpack much more comfortable for a single tank than the tech backplate and wings. I also know of several divers who have moved away from their tech backplates to the old backpack. One can easily add an Oxycheq wing to a backpack to make a BC that works far better for a single tank the a tech backplate.
The tech backplate and wings cannot be beat for doubles, or if you want to hang off extra tanks, but I just don’t like it for the single tank.
