I, too, am interested in the actual date and circumstances of the sinking of the Avalon. Do you think the local newspaper archives might contain the facts?
Although a lot of the Avalon was cut away when she was converted into a salvage barge, I think the bow must have been pretty much intact. Look at the bollards and howser holes, they are still there.
