I travel a lot and I see a lot of new boats and new DMs. Some DM are great, some are not, just like the divers they support. A good DM has a positive attitude, has intimate knowledge about the dive location (depths, currents, potential problems, local customs) and communicates this local knowledge to the divers. If knowledge is imparted properly, the DM gains a lot of respect and authority. If the DM is a tapeworm, we have all experienced these, the DM wil earn no respect from the divers and hence no authority..
