I use Terry's plan by putting two bungees on each instrument in case one should break. Also, if you're diving in a neoprene suit, allow for suit compression at your maximum planned depth. The bungees should be tight enough to hold the compass without squeezing the arm, but loose enough to move the compass easily. At only 120 feet, you suit probably didn't compress much, so I would think that the bungee was way too tight.
I would also re-evaluate this incident before making any rash decisions about your diving future. Diving safely is one thing, but limiting your options this early in your dive career will only make you miss out on some great dives later.
