in the open water a backplate makes ab-solutely no sense at all. sorry i disagree with you. in your case, a very accomplished cave diver, a backplate it totally appropriate, and any other rig would be a waste of money or unnecessary redundancy or wasted storage space in your house.

i know Andy Voss likes to dive with his backplate in the Ocean. he also wears yellow antennae and a yellow wetsuit. he is a crack up and a lot of fun, and he has raised the bar in Northern California regarding safety through redundancy and failsafe gear choices. if he wants to wear a backplate in the Ocean that is fine with me.
