My position is that a computer is a nice safety tool to use while one is learning tables for the newbie. New divers are not qualified to compute anything on the fly and a mistake in computation could be fatal. A computer in the hands of experienced divers doing multiple dives is a little piece of mind.

You mention crutches. You could say the same thing about anyone thinking they need to be DIR to dive simple recreational dives. This is a crutch. I contend you don't need any DIR equipment to perform safe successful dives in CA. One may choose to use DIR equipment here as one could choose to use a computer. Neither is absolutely necessary. A jacket style BC works perfectly fine here as do Zeagle Ranger, Tech, Aqualung, Seaquest, Mares and many others. Also not using a BC has proven to be acceptable to highly experienced divers.
