normally they would try to anchor the dive boat on a pillar. the play-out in the line would allow the boat to be a few hundred yards down current and in really deep water.

i have seen an anchor tear loose and go flying thru the Ocean, and then re-anchor itself in the really deep 200' section of the Ocean. that ended up being a very long surface swim for me back to the boat. great deep dive, however!

pillars are beautiful dives. diving between them is like flying when the water is clear enough.

if the sea is rough, then holding onto the anchor line is not a good idea. but at least it is there for a visual reference, to help a diver visually control his/her descent rate.
